Though it occupies the second position among the manufacturers of high-grade beer in Russia, for whom a quarter of all beer, which are sold in the country, are allocated, it takes only the seventh position in Russia. In spite of the fact that the Russian beer market takes the fifth place in the world by size, and shows the most impressive dynamics equally with China, SABMiller estimates the opportunities of immediate absorptions carefully in this market. " We continue to estimate the opportunities of the consolidation and the absorption, but we shall not hurry up and buy something ", - Alan Clark, the director of the European subdivision of the company, said. As he said, local players in the Russian market give the basic attention to the cheap sorts of beer. " The consolidation will take place, but international players operate reluctantly, and we feel comfortably ourselves in the absence of the consolidation ", - he told. SABMiller entered the market of Russia at the end of the ninetieth years, when it constructed the plant in Kaluga, where the sorts of beer "Zolotaya bochka" and " Tri bogatirya " are produced, and also Miller Genuine Draft and Pilsner Urquell. Under Clark's forecast, the sector of high-grade beer will increase by 10-15 % annualy, while the whole sector will increase approximately by 7 %. Almost 150 million Russians drink on the average 51 litre of beer annually. It is much less, than in Germany (more than 100 litres) and Poland (74 litres). It is expected, that the number of the consumers and the volumes of consumed beer in Russia will grow. The share of SABMiller in the market of high-grade beer has increased up to 17 % for a year by the end of March from 12 %. The first place belongs to Baltic Beverages Holding (BBH) (30 %), turkish Efes (16 %), Sun Interbrew (15 %). " Our business is concentrated on the top number of high-quality spectrum, we do not have average brands and economic brands, and we have no plans to produce them ", - Clark told. BBH, which sells leading Russian brand "Baltic", has 33 % in the beer market in Russia, it is more, then Sun Interbrew has (15,3 %). Two Russian private companies ''Ochakovo'' and ''Krasny Vostok'' take the third and fourth places accordingly. Heineken, Efes and SABMiller follow them.

Beer can rise in price by 50 % in Russia in 2005
Beer can rise in price by 50 % in Russia in 2005, if the suggestion of the subcommittee of tax legislation of the Committee of the budget and taxes of the State Duma about increase of the rate of the excise on beer more than 135 % will be supported. Such forecast was made by heads of the Union of Russian producers of beer and soft drinks production at the press conference in Moscow. The subcommittee has approved the amendment about the increase of the rate of the excise on beer up to 3,65 roubles for 1 litre at the session on Tuesday. This year the rate of the excise on beer makes 1,55 roubles. As the vice-president of council the Union, the president of joint-stock company " Ochakovo " Alexey Kochetov has declared at press conference, the growth of the rate of the excise on beer will lead to such situation, that its share in the sale price of beer will rais from today's 12 % up to 27 %. And he noted, that " this indexes does not exceed 10 % all over the world ". The role of all taxes in the price of beer, under his forecast, will make 61,7 % against 46 % this year. " Under such tax obligation brewers will be compelled to increase the price of their production that will lead to the rise of the retail price and to the reduction of the demand for beer by 25-30 % ", - considers A.Kochetov. The beer production in Russia in 2005 can also decrease approximately by such index, he added. " Moreover, such price level will not allow average and small enterprises to develop, which will be compelled or to reduce the production sharply, or to be closed in general ", - A.Kochetov noted. A.Kochetov named sharp increase of the rate of the excise as " an irresponsible decision of the hotheads which were not think about its consequences ". " Unreasoned increase of excises leads to the reduction of production and to the reduction of the budgetary receipts, the state loses much more, than gets ", - he emphasized, having reminded, that brewing is included into the five of large tax-payer. Russia produced 757 million decilitres of beer in 2003, that is 7,8% more then in 2002. It is the lowest growth rate since 1999.
